2016 Integrated Curriculum for the Art Classroom Field Studies: Art and Science on the Bay

This four-day summer institute at the Chincoteague Field Station in Wallops Island will provide a unique opportunity to dissolve and expand the boundaries between art and science through experiences in the field and studio. Working collaboratively, facilitated by artist/art educator and scientist faculty our conversation will focus on the intersection and possibilities between the arts and sciences. Each day will consist of presentations and demonstrations, collaborative learning, fieldwork and art making on the coast of Virginia and Maryland. We will take a closer look at contemporary artists that merge with significant scientific topics of our times such as boundaries and change as a catalyst for developing curricular/art-based/research to take back to the classroom or one’s art making practice.
STUDY INSTITUTE PROGRAM: The onsite component of the institute will meet beginning Thursday, July 28th with check-in at Wallop’s Island beginning at 12:00. The course will officially start at 4pm that afternoon. On Friday July 29th and Saturday July 30th the day will start early at 8 am with field work in the surrounding area, an afternoon rest and studio art break from 2-4 and then evening sessions from 4-7. Sunday, July 31st will begin at 9 am and class will conclude by 2pm. Additional ONLINE course work will begin one-week prior on July 22nd and course work will end August 5th. Please note that the institute is strictly limited to 15 participants. Limited enrollment for ACT 48 non-credit students.
Dr. Amy Pfeiler-Wunder, Institute Co-Coordinator, Associate Professor of Art Education at Kutztown University and co-coordinator of the art education graduate program. She received her Ph.D. in teaching and learning-art from the University of Iowa. Prior to joining higher education she taught for thirteen years with pre-K-9th graders in various settings. She presents her research extensively at regional, state, national, and international conferences. Her work examines the impact of intersectionality on one’s professional identity with keen attention to gender and socioeconomic status coupled with discussions on theory to practice between higher education and K-12 art educators. Over the last year, she has presented numerous professional development workshops with her colleague Dr. Marilyn Stewart on implementing the new visual arts standards into curriculum at workshops across the nation. Her research has been published in several books and journals. Additionally, she is active in the National Art Education Association as the current chair of the Professional Learning through Research Working Group under the Research Commission. She also serves on the editorial board of the Art Education Journal. From 2010-2014 she was the national advisor to Student Leadership team of NAEA and was the Western Region Elementary Art Teacher of the Year in 2007.
Dr. Erin R. Kraal, PhD, Institute Co-Coordinator, Professor of Physical Science at Kutztown University studies the surfaces of planets in our Solar System. Her B.S. is in Geology with an M.S. in Earth Science and a PhD in planetary science from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her research has taken her from Alaskan glaciers to the Atacama Desert studying how surface features are linked to planetary processes. Dr. Kraal has received fellowships from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and NASA. She is a nationally elected counselor for the Council of Undergraduate Research and has served as a leader/facilitator/presenter at a range of workshops sponsored by the National Science Foundation, National Association of Geoscience Educators, and Council for Undergraduate Research. Her educational research focuses on introductory level science experiences, place-based research through student audio production, and the integration research in first year courses and assessment of the learning outcomes. In July 2014 she was the guest editor of the National Association of Geoscience Educations quarterly publications. Dr. Kraal is a frequent speaker at schools, museums, and groups about Mars, women in science, and planetary science topics.
NON-CREDIT WORKSHOP $400.00 (includes housing, food and excursions on the bay)
GRADUATE CREDIT FEES
Pennsylvania ACT 48 hours available.
On-line course is 3 credits and 90 ACT 48 hours.
