Below is a list of upcoming Teacher Workshops at PA State Parks. Registration details are included with each course description. Flyers are attached for two of the courses. More workshops are coming soon! Please spread the word.

Name of Workshop: Growing Up Wild & PLT Early Childhood Educator Workshop

  • Location: Nescopeck State Park, Drums, PA
  • Date: October 22, 2014
  • Time: 9:00 am – 3:30 pm
  • Fee: $20.00; payable to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  • Open to: Grades pre-K - 2
  • Act 48 hours: 5.0 hrs. Act 48/PQAS hrs.
  • Description: For those of you already familiar with the popular Project Wild and Project Learning Tree curriculums, check out their newest offerings written specifically for early childhood educators!

These curriculums are written for formal and non-formal educators of young children ages 3-7. The activities and experiences within provide an early foundation for developing positive impressions about the natural world, as well as lifelong social and academic skills. Both guides correlate to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) criteria for curriculum and the Head Start Child Outcomes Framework.

Name of Workshop: Pennsylvania Songbirds Teacher Workshop

  • Location: Little Pine State Park, Waterville, PA 17776
  • Date: October 25, 2014
  • Time: 8:30 am – 3:30 pm
  • Fee: $25.00; payable to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  • Open to: Grades pre-K - 12
  • Act 48 hours: 6.0 hrs.
  • Description: One-day seminar, rain or shine. Participants will receive manual and related materials. Morning coffee and snacks provided; bring a lunch. We will meet in the ELC, in the lower floor of the office building.

Name of Workshop: Go Teach: Hiking 101 Educator’s Workshop

  • Location: Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center, Nazareth, PA
  • Date: November 15th, 2014
  • Time: 8am to 3pm
  • Fee: $20.00; payable to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  • Open to what grades? K-12
  • Act 48 hours? Yes, 6 hours
  • Description: Hiking is more than putting on a pair of boots and walking in the woods. It’s a lifelong recreational activity that can increase one’s stamina, endurance and athleticism. It’s also the basis of numerous other recreations including backpacking, orienteering and geo-caching.

Learn how to enable your students to discover Penn’s Woods through an interdisciplinary set of lessons for teachers created by the PA Bureau of State Parks. Lessons focus on health, fitness and trip planning; map reading and identifying local trails; forest ecology as well as nature journaling. The lessons meet several Physical Education & Health standards as well as standards for Geography, Science & Ecology and the Humanities.

As part of this workshop teachers will receive lessons, ACT 48 hours and access to loaner equipment to help incorporate outdoor recreation education into their school.

Name of Workshop: Go Teach: GPS Educator’s Workshop

  • Location: Nescopeck State Park, Drums, PA
  • Date: November 20, 2014
  • Time: 9:00 am – 3:30 pm
  • Fee: $20.00; payable to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  • Open to: Grades 4 - 12
  • Act 48 hours: 5.0 hrs. Act 48
  • Description: GO Teach is a series of teacher workshops that focus on cross-curricular connections linked by a common outdoor recreation. This workshop presents a set of standards based lessons that enable middle and high school students to learn about global positioning system (GPS) technology and how to use it for healthy lifelong recreation. As a part of the workshop, teachers will receive lesson plans, ACT 48 hours and access to loaner equipment to help facilitate the lessons on their school grounds.
