Teachable Moment from IRIS - Magnitude 7.1 SE Indian Ridge

Check out their PowerPoint, visualizations and animations on an unusual 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck in the southern Indian Ocean approximately 1022km (635 mi) ENE of Heard Island and McDonald Islands.

From EARTH Magazine, 11/30/2015  --  A new study from geoscience researchers has important implications for studies of Mesoamerica and North America prior to the arrival of European settlers. Using isotope geochemistry, scientists at Pennsylvania's Dickenson College and the University of Arizona are trying to identify if turquoise mineral specimens record the signature of their parent ore deposits.

11/24/2015  --  IRIS does an excellent job collecting and preparing resources we can use in our classrooms on recent, significant earthquakes. Check out their PowerPoint, visualizations and animations on the two deep 7.6 magnitude earthquakes that have shaken a sparsely populated jungle region near the Peru-Brazil border in southeast Peru. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

Check out their PowerPoint, visualizations and animations on the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck offshore in the Solomon Islands. The earthquake occurred 178 km (111 mi) WNW of Honiara, Solomon Islands at a depth of 13.4 km (8.3 mi), according to the US Geological Survey.

October 29, 2015  --  The Amazon in the north of Brazil is being deforested, and it is estimated that 80% of the wood harvested is illegal. Many environmental groups are fighting deforestation on the basis of its effects on global warming. But there’s one group of indigenous people in Brazil is fighting back against illegal loggers. This tribe is trying to preserve the trees because they are central to their way of life. They surround and warn illegal loggers and then drive them away with bows and arrows.
