National Fossil Day is organized by the National Park Service as part of the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) Earth Science Week (http://www.earthsciweek.org) to promote public awareness and stewardship of fossils, with the goal of inspiring the next generation of paleontologists and fossil enthusiasts.

From AGI Public Relations  --  Science teachers and students can go online today to use a new educational resource of the Earth Science Week website, the "Be a Citizen Scientist" page, which features information and links for recommended "citizen science" programs focusing on Earth science.

Citizen science initiatives invite ordinary citizens to participate in scientific research by making observations and contributing to large data sets.

At AMNH - Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs

From the American Museum of Natural History in NYC  --  They flew with their fingers. They walked on their wings. Some were gigantic, while others could fit in the palm of a hand. Millions of years ago, the skies were ruled by pterosaurs, the first animals with backbones to fly under their own power.

In the new exhibition Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs, rare fossils, life-size models, and hands-on interactives bring these ancient animals to life.

Only three people in the world have crossed Antarctica alone, and only one was a woman. Author and explorer Felicity Aston, the first woman to cross Antarctica alone, will speak at Penn State during Polar Day 2014.

Penn State University’s Polar Day, a free public event celebrating the natural and cultural value of the Polar Regions. Polar Day will be held at Penn State University Park in the HUB Freeman Auditorium on Saturday, April 19 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
