11/19/17  --  IRIS does an excellent job collecting and preparing resources we can use in our classrooms on recent, significant earthquakes. Check out their PowerPoint, visualizations and animations on this powerful magnitude 7.0 earthquake that occurred 82km ENE of Maré Island, the second-largest of the Loyalty Islands in the archipelago of New Caledonia. The initial report of the magnitude and shallow 10km depth prompted a tsunami warning.

Check out their PowerPoint, visualizations and animations on this powerful magnitude 8.1 earthquake that occurred offshore Mexico.  It was felt as far away as Mexico City and Guatemala City.  This occurred as heavy rains from Hurricane Katia were approaching from the east.  There are early reports of 32 deaths from this earthquake, with homes, schools and hospitals damaged.

Check out their PowerPoint, visualizations and animations on this powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake that occurred near the westernmost extension of the Aleutian Island chain. The epicenter was located 688.6 km (427.9 miles) E of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia, at a depth of 11.7 km below Earth’s surface.

Check out their PowerPoint, visualizations and animations on a magnitude 7.9 earthquake that occurred 40 kilometers (24 miles) west of the town of Panguna, at an intermediate depth (136 km, 84.5 miles) beneath the island of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea.

December 25, 2016  --  IRIS does an excellent job collecting and preparing resources we can use in our classrooms on recent, significant earthquakes. Check out their PowerPoint, visualizations and animations on a magnitude 7.6 earthquake that occurred near the southern tip of Chiloe Island in southern Chile. There are no immediate reports of deaths. There are reports of landslides and some damage to highways.

Check out their PowerPoint, visualizations and animations on a 7.9 magnitude earthquake has occurred east of New Ireland, Papua New Guinea. The earthquake occurred 132.8 km (82.5 mi) east of Kokopo, Papua New Guinea, at a depth of 103.2 km (64 miles). There are no current tsunami warnings in effect.

December 8, 2016  --  IRIS does an excellent job collecting and preparing resources we can use in our classrooms on recent, significant earthquakes. Check out their PowerPoint, visualizations and animations on a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck offshore in the Solomon Islands.  The earthquake occurred less than 30 kilometers off the island of Makira, at a depth of 48.7 km (30.3 miles), and 70 kilometers southwest of the island's city of Kirakira, about 4:38 a.m. local time Friday. There are no current Tsunami warnings in effect.

November 24, 2016  --  IRIS does an excellent job collecting and preparing resources we can use in our classrooms on recent, significant earthquakes. Check out their PowerPoint, visualizations and animations on a magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck off the Pacific coast of Central America Thursday at a depth of 10.3 kilometers (6.4 miles).  Its epicenter was located 149 km (93 miles) south-southwest of Puerto Triunfo in El Salvador.

Teachable Moment from IRIS - Magnitude 7.8 New Zealand

November 13, 2016  --  IRIS does an excellent job collecting and preparing resources we can use in our classrooms on recent, significant earthquakes. Check out their PowerPoint, visualizations and animations on a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that hit the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island just before midnight local time Sunday, triggering multiple aftershocks and tsunami waves. The earthquake struck about 93 km (58 miles) north of Christchurch at a depth of 23 km (14 miles). Two people are reported dead, and the extent of the property damage is still unknown.

August 29, 2016  --  IRIS does an excellent job collecting and preparing resources we can use in our classrooms on recent, significant earthquakes. Check out their PowerPoint, visualizations and animations on a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that has occurred 975 km (605 miles) northwest of Ascension Island in the Atlantic Ocean at a depth of 10 km (6 miles).  There are no reports of damage or injuries, and no tsunami warnings issued..
