Some areas in Oklahoma experience two to three earthquakes a day! These quakes are being linked to a modern oil production technique known as hydraulic fracturing. It’s the process used to dispose of wastewater created during the extraction of oil from shale. From EARTH Magazine, 02/26/15  --  After the Aug. 24, 2014, Napa Valley earthquake, movement continued along the principal fault to the north of the epicenter, according to a report released by the U.S. Geological Survey. Such "afterslip" is known from previous quakes, but this is the first time that strong afterslip has been observed in a populated residential community. While the majority of shaking on the main strand of the West Napa Fault Zone occurred in rural fields, approximately 20 homes were immediately affected.

Check out their PowerPoint, visualizations and animations on this powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake that occurred 150 kilometers (93 miles) off the coast of Ternate, Indonesia.  The 35 kilometer deep (21.7 miles) earthquake struck at 10:31 a.m. local time.

IRIS does an excellent job collecting and preparing resources we can use in our classrooms on recent, significant earthquakes. Check out their PowerPoint, visualizations and animations on this powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake, which struck 141 km (88 miles) northeast of Ndoi Island, Fiji, and 313 km (194 mi) west-northwest of Nuku’alofa, Tonga according to the US Geological Survey, but there were no reports of damage.

Teachable Moment from IRIS- Magnitude 7.3 Offshore El Salvador, 10/14/14

Check out their PowerPoint, visualizations and animations on this powerful magnitude 7.3 earthquake, which struck off the Pacific coast of Central America late Monday night. Early reports indicate one death.The earthquake occurred at a depth of 40 km (24.9 miles).  Its epicenter was offshore, 86 km (53 miles) SSW of La Union, El Salvador.

Check out their PowerPoint, visualizations and animations on this powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake near the intersection of the Pacific, Nazca and Antarctic Plates. The epicenter was located ~3000 km off the Chilean coast and occurred on October 9, 2014.
