Plate Boundary Research Project

Learning Objectives

Students will become experts on the plate tectonics of a specific region, by either researching volcanic activity or earthquake activity associated with the tectonic activity of a specific region.

Standards Addressed

Assessment Anchor S.8.D.1 - Earth features and processes that change Earth and its resources

Preparation Time Needed

All of the information is provided here - only time for photocopying and setting up the groups is required.  Teachers need to be comfortable instructing students on how to use Diigo and how to create a MS PowerPoint presentation.

Class Time Required

If this exercise is to be completed outside of class, students should be provided approximately two weeks to complete, along with one or two in-class sessions to prepare with their partner.  If the exercise is to be completed only during class time,  this exercise may take as many as five one-hour class periods for the research and group presentations.

Activity Description

Students will become experts on the plate tectonics of a specific region, by either researching volcanic activity or earthquake activity associated with the tectonic activity of a specific region.

Students will use Diigo, a social bookmarking site, to collaborate on and manage their research online.

Students will also create and deliver a 15 minute oral presentation using MS Powerpoint or Google Presenter to share what they have learned and help them manage the flow of their presentation.

Students will:

  • Peruse websites already bookmarked in their Diigo group (set up by the teacher) for information, images, and video that allow them to respond to specific prompt questions designed for each specific region (found on each Region Sheet Overview, in the attached files starting with filenames "RSO_")
  • Search online for additional information and videos – bookmark these resources in their Diigo group
  • Use Diigo to highlight text and comment on bookmarked resources
  • Collaborate with their partner on a 15-minute Powerpoint presentation
  • Present what they have learned to the class

By using Diigo, students and teacher will be able to more easily communicate, critique, and collaborate on the information they find.  This will help the students better manage the material they are researching by: making annotations directly linked to the portion of the article they want to cite; more clearly document where their information is coming from; and help maintain the integrity of their final product.  In addition, students and teacher will be able to easily access work from school and home, as Diigo is a “cloud-based” resource.  Lessening the incident of lost work or old-editions of research notes as Diigo is a real-time application.
